What should I expect at a college assessment test? ›

Most college placement exams are not pass or fail. They are a snapshot of your level of knowledge in certain areas. If you don't do well the first time, there is room to improve by retaking most exams.

English: The VPT English assessment consists of an essay question and 40 multiple choice questions. The essay must be a multi-paragraph essay. There will be two topics to choose from and you must choose one to write about.

The VPT evaluates readiness for college-level English and math courses. It is not an admission test. The VPT ensures that students are placed into the right course(s) for their program of study.

If you do poorly on the ACCUPLACER test, you will be placed in a more remedial class, meaning you will still have to work your way up to that harder class eventually. And THAT means it will take you longer to get your degree and cost you more to get it due to the extra classes you will need to take.

A failed final exam will always cause your overall grade to drop unless you had a failing course grade at the onset. Failing a final exam will usually cause you to drop a letter grade. But, again, this drop in your grade may not be enough to drop your letter grade to an F.

What kind of math is on the college placement test? ›

You can expect the Basic Math Placement Test to cover arithmetic and pre-algebra skills. An Algebra Test is generally given as a separate portion of the basic test. Some incoming students will be given an Advanced Mathematics Placement Test, which includes college algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
