Rust has a particular mechanic that allows you to fix your construction mistakes within a specific timeframe. When you put a wall into place, you have 10 minutes to remove it. This is a great mechanic that helps the player avoid going through a lot of trouble due to a placement mistake.
However, realism is emphasized in this game, and being able to magically remove walls and move them around is somewhat unrealistic. So, after you’ve placed a wall and a few minutes have passed, it’s going to stay there. There are only a few options that can help you tear it down.
How to Demolish Walls in Rust With a Hammer
If you’re expecting that you’ll be hitting the wall with a hammer to tear it down, you’ll be disappointed. In this case, you’re upgrading the wall to remove it. Using the hammer tool, upgrade the stone wall into a sheet metal wall. Then, remove all sheet metal supplies from the cupboard to avoid auto-repair.
Unfortunately, you can’t just remove sheet metal walls either. You’re going to have to wait for it to decay. This can take a while, though, as sheet metal takes around eight hours to fully decay into nothingness. Upgrading the wall using a hammer isn’t the quickest method of demolishing a wall, but it is relatively clean.

The most straightforward way to demolish your walls in Rust is to use the C4 method. That’s right; you can use a C4 explosive to remove an entire wall. Creating the C4 item is expensive and takes a lot of time. But it’s the only reasonable way to remove some permanently placed walls.
If you want to go into demolition mode, the item you need is a “Timed Explosive Charge.” These charges can be stuck to the object that you want to destroy. To create the Timed Explosive Charge, you’re going to need a whole lot of resources. Here are the three components necessary:

To make things even more complicated, you’ll also need around 2,500 Wood as Furnace fuel for ore smelting. Crafting C4 is quite tricky, too. And after all of that, you can only destroy a single wall with the Timed Explosive Charge. The best way to go about things would be to build your Rust house carefully.
How to Demolish Wood Walls in Rust
Wood walls in Rust are purposefully weak on the inside. You want to be on the weak side of the wall so look for the side that’s flat and light brown. If you see a darker brown tree bark shade, you’re on the strong side of the wall and it won’t come down any time soon.
Here are some damage multipliers for the weak side of the wall. In other words, how many “impacts” it’s going to take to destroy a wooden wall.
- 1x with Explosives
- 1.2x with Explosive Bullets/Incendiary Shells

The obvious downside to a wooden construction is that the other players can destroy the walls fairly easily, as well. It may take more struggle compared to the weak side, but it’s still doable.
How to Demolish Metal Walls in Rust
In Rust Legacy, metal walls used to be a great construction option. They were very resilient and required using four Explosives to be destroyed. Unfortunately, Legacy is no longer available to players so now they have to contend with metal walls, which deteriorate over time. The only thing you need to demolish sheet metal walls is time.
If you want to remove metal walls, start by taking out all your sheet metal supplies from the cupboard. Next, wait for around eight hours. After eight hours, the metal walls deteriorate and disappear on their own.
How to Demolish Stone Walls in Rust
Unlike wood and sheet metal, stone walls are extremely resilient. The only way to destroy them (from inside or the outside) is to use a Timed Explosive Charge (C4). They require a lot of resources, though, so you’re going to have to decide if demolishing it is worth the effort.
