Are you and your kids ready for School Year 2020-2021, or are you still confused about the ‘new normal’ procedures related to the implementation of distance learning?In the Philippines, President Rodrigo Duterte mandated the Department of Education (DepEd) to delay, if not, cancel face-to-face teaching for as long as the vaccine for the coronavirus disease is not yet made available to the general public. However, opting not to delay education, DepEd introduced alternative learning delivery modalities that utilize modern technology.DepEd coined the term distance learning, “where learning takes place between the teacher and the learner who are geographically remote from each other during instruction.”Note: Distance learning is not only limited to online learning.This approach has three types of delivery modalities, depending on the students’ available resources: the Online Distance Learning (ODL), Modular Distance Learning (MDL), and Self-learning Module (TV/Radio-Based Instruction).Moreover, parents can also opt for homeschooling, which we will also briefly discuss later on in this article.
Now, let’s first review the first three types of distance learning, according to the definition of DepEd.

Homeschooling option, on the other hand, is learning in a home-based environment to be facilitated by qualified parents, guardians, or tutors who have undergone relevant training. Moreover, facilitating parents can either choose between enrolling under a homeschool provider or independently homeschool the learner.

It has been recognized by the national government under Article XIV, Section 2 of the 1987 Philippines Constitution, that “the state shall (2) establish and maintain a system of free public education in the elementary and high school levels. Without limiting the natural right of parents to their children…” and that “the state shall (4) encourage non-formal, informal, and indigenous learning systems, as well as self-learning, independent, and out-of-school study programs…”Check out below the Algorithm for Learning Delivery Modalities:
