Confused over Hoya UV filter range!

Jan 30, 2017

Help, I am very confused over the Hoya UV filter range!

It all started so simply, I just wanted to buy a really good UV filter (to stop UV light, not to protect the lens) and assumed that B&W were possibly the best, However ...

...That was until I found the following excellent comprehensive LensTip 72mm UV filter test article which showed me that Hoya was the way to go:
LensTip UV filters test results summary page .

The best filter by far was the 'Hoya 72 mm HMC UV-0', which not only stopped UV strongly with a fierce drop-off immediately after the visible spectrum, from the images shown it can also be seen that it did not add any horrid flare. Plus it was less expensive than many and in fact not the dearest of the Hoya range!

So that is the one I wanted to get, Sorted, or so I thought. But that is when the difficulties started, the test was a few years ago, and it is now difficult for me to identify that exact filter amongst their current range. What a mess Hoya's UV filter range seems to be in, it is as if the marketing boys have been let loose. There are 6 different Hoya UV filter types; HMC UV-c, HMC UV-0, HD, Pro1, SuperPro1, Fusion Antistatic!

From the LensTip tests one can no longer assume that the more you pay the better the filter, so just buying the dearest is the wrong way to decide (plus I couldn't afford that). I would really like one that has the UV-0 cutoff slope, terific multi coating, and optically flat glass. But trying to identify what does what from their range is not so easy, plus different sellers may possibly have different packaging (I am not totally sure about that yet!).

For those with patience to help me understand what on earth their (possibly overlapping) range is about, I have put a link below to the Hoya website filter area, and also a link to their filter catalogue.

Below are screenshots describing each from their UK importers page....

Ignoring price, which of these UV filters do you think is meant to be the best?
