Introduction

In the late 1990s I used the book A Directory of London Photographers by Michael Pritchard to date, to within a few years, a photograph of a relative who was wearing the uniform of Christ's Hospital School. I thought how useful it would be to have a similar list for Wales and discovered that two lists had been published by the Royal Photographic Society Historical Group. They were Dyfed Photographers by Megan Colboun, which covered Cardiganshire, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire, and The Commercial Camera in Cardiff 1855-1920 by Stephen K Jones.

How the index was compiled

I have used directories held at the Guildhall Library, London, the Society of Genealogists and the British Library. There are obviously directories elsewhere which could be consulted, so it pays to consult all available published lists of photographers, as other researchers will have had access to a different selection.

See below for a list of the directories used and links to other indexes or websites.

Coverage

There are separate surname indexes to each of the old counties of Wales including Monmouthshire. The Glamorgan index does not include Cardiff as there was already a significant published index, but eventually I hope to create my own and add it to the site. I have retained the spelling of place names, as they appear in the directories.

Using the index to help date photographs

Directories were the equivalent of our Yellow Pages, i.e. a place to advertise one's services. It obviously took the publishers a while to collect the data, so the information was always slightly out of date. Comparing the addresses of photographers printed on cartes-de-visite or cabinet prints with the dates they appear in directories should give an approximate date of the photograph. Unfortunately some photographers stayed at the same address for many years, e.g. the business known as Thomas Forrest was at Market St, Pontypridd from 1868 to 1926. In such cases, if you have several cartes from the same photographer, a comparison of styles of mount could help. If the backs are numbered this would be done in sequence. Printing dates are sometimes given, but most proprietors advertised that negatives were kept and copies were always available, so in one case I have a carte printed seven years after the sitter had died and an identical one printed ten years earlier.

Dating from costume

What the sitters wore can also help date a photograph. The books by Avril Lansdell and Robert Pols are useful for this. Broadly speaking the younger the adult the more fashionable their dress and hairstyle are likely to be. However, bear in mind the social class of the family. While most people probably wore their best clothes to have a formal photograph taken, they might not have been dressed in the latest style. Family groups are useful as the dress of individuals can be compared. Some photographers would hire clothing to sitters. In 1875 Isaac Stone of Tenby offered Welsh costume available! It would be a pity to confuse this with what people wore everyday. Several books can guide you through identifying and dating photographs by the materials they are made from, details of photographers, changing styles of mount, the dress of the sitters, etc. See below for a bibliography.

The Photographers

As would be expected, the photographers are found chiefly in larger towns and seaside resorts, some having more than one studio, as advertised on the back of the cartes. This may help in dating the photograph. In the early years of photography the directories often list photographers under Artists with and photographer added almost as an afterthought. Indeed some photographers painted lightly over the image to create a colour portrait. In 1884 James Dowdall of Swansea described himself as a photographic painter, while in the 1880s and 1890s Harris, Son & Co of Merthyr Tydfil used the photographs they took as a basis for life-size portraits in oils.

Occasionally photographers diversified, many offering the allied service of picture framing, like James Stevens of Holyhead in 1889. Others dealt in china and glass, such as J J Williams of Conway, Harry Mortimer of Llanwrtyd, Jeremiah Griffith of Monmouth town and T R Hammond of Conway, who was sole agent for Goss China. J R Hughes dealt in stationery and fancy goods, while Miss Mathew of Towyn ran a fancy repository. Other trades included a hosier, watchmaker and jeweller, piano tuner, hairdresser, surveyor and draughtsman, and a plumber.

The majority of the people advertising were male, but women photographers were known. Miss Hannah Rogerson had a studio in Newport, Mon. in 1865. Women were said to be better at photographing children. The long exposures necessary meant that the sitter had to keep still, sometimes with the aid of a clamp or props. In the directories of 1914 nine new women's names appear, some possibly running a business while their men-folk were away at the Front.

Acknowledgements

My thanks go to the RPS Historical Group for their initial advice, to the staff at the Guildhall Library, Society of Genealogists and the British Library for their help, and to Lynne Marsh and Roland Thorne for information from cartes and details of articles.

## "My Grandfather, Nathaniel Evans, was born in the village of Trefegwyns in 1865. In 1915 he moved to Colwyn Bay and became involved with the Congo Institute; and following the closure of that organisation took up residence there till around 1929 when he left North Wales and finally settled in Cardiff. He died there in 1962 at age 97 but seemed to continue his passion for photography throughout his life". (Petyer Gordon Smith-Evans 23/10/11)

FAQs

Was there photography around 1850? ›

The Early Decades: 1840s–1850s

Photography was introduced to the world in 1839. When the new medium arrived in the United States that year, it first established itself in major cities in the East.

What is Victorian era photography? ›

Victorian Photographers Used the Daguerreotype

The image was made through a combination of silver and mercury resting on the plate. The daguerreotype technique was extremely fragile and had to be covered with glass for stability. The process only could capture one picture at a time and was very time-consuming.

Were there photographs in 1843? ›

A daguerreotype from 1843 which is thought to be the first photograph showing a photographer at work. The image depicts Jabez Hogg photographing W.S. Johnson in the studio of Richard Beard. Daguerreotypes were sold in Britain throughout the 1840s and into the early 1850s.

Why was 1888 such an important year in the history of photography? ›

By far the most significant event in the history of amateur photography was the introduction of the Kodak #1 camera in 1888. Invented and marketed by George Eastman (1854–1932), a former bank clerk from Rochester, New York, the Kodak was a simple box camera that came loaded with a 100-exposure roll of film.

What kind of photography became popular in the 1850s? ›

While the 1840s were overwhelmingly dominated by the daguerreotype—magically precise, one-of-a-kind images on highly polished, silver-plated sheets of copper—the 1850s saw the rise of paper photography, invented by the Englishman William Henry Fox Talbot.

How long did it take to take a picture in 1850? ›

Though early daguerreotype images required an exposure of around twenty minutes, by the early 1840s it had been reduced to about twenty seconds. Even so, photography subjects needed to remain completely still for long periods of time for the image to come out crisp and not blurred by their movement.

Who invented photography in the Victorian era? ›

Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre

Each daguerreotype (as Daguerre dubbed his invention) was a one-of-a-kind image on a highly polished, silver-plated sheet of copper. Daguerre's invention did not spring to life fully grown, although in 1839 it may have seemed that way.

When was the first photograph taken in the Victorian era? ›

Then, in 1826 or 1827 (sources aren't clear on the exact year), he produced a view from his workroom, this time on a pewter plate, in a process called heliography, creating the first-ever permanently fixed photographic image.

What was the Victorian camera called? ›

The bellows camera was the most common form of camera found in the Victorian portrait studio. Sometimes photographers took the camera with them on their travels.

Which was the dominant photographic process from the 1850's to 1880? ›

Early American Photography on Paper, 1850s–1860s

The daguerreotype process, employing a polished silver-plated sheet of copper, was the dominant form of photography for the first twenty years of picture making in the United States.

What were pictures called in the 1800s? ›
