Two speed cameras on main Wrexham roads are not operational, according to GoSafe. The A541 Mold Road camera, located near the STōK Racecourse stadium, and the Holt Road camera are currently non-functional. This revelation comes after Freedom of Information figures revealed that the Mold Road camera hasn't caught any speeding drivers since 2023, when it caught 126 drivers. The Holt Road camera also failed to detect any speeding vehicles last year. GoSafe attributes the non-operation of the Mold Road camera to its use of wet film technology, which they no longer support. The Holt Road camera, on the other hand, lacks Home Office Type Approval (HOTA) for speeds below 30 mph, despite the speed limit being 20 mph. The local highways authority is responsible for installing and upgrading these cameras, and GoSafe processes the resulting offenses. Fixed cameras without HOTA or using outdated technology require an upgrade or HOTA approval to resume operations. In contrast, average speed cameras in the air quality monitoring zone on the A483 50 mph stretch in Wrexham caught nearly 9,000 speeding motorists last year. The minimum penalty for speeding is a £100 fine and three penalty points on the driver's license. Drivers may also be required to attend a Driver Education Course, which incurs a cost but avoids adding penalty points. However, those caught speeding at excessive speeds may face court summons, with penalties including fines, penalty points, and driving disqualification.
