The Daltons, sometimes referred to as the Dalton Brothers or the Dalton Gang, are the main antagonists of the Lucky Luke franchise, as well as the main protagonists of in their spinoff animated series of the same name.

They are a quartet of brothers who are cousins of the Dalton Gang, criminals who actually existed and were active back in the age of the Wild West. The latter appeared in an episode of the series but are eventually killed and forgotten. To avenge them, they will bicker constantly with Lucky Luke, from which they will be constantly defeated.

Like their cousins, they are feared criminals, as well as Luke's primary enemies. They usually break out of jail to pursue Luke, only for Luke to put them back at the end of each episode. Though they were initially shown as incompetent, they eventually became a real threat as the series went on. They all have the same face and wear the same clothes, only being distinguished by their height.

Appearances[]

The Dalton Brothers appeared along with Lucky Luke in the first Lucky Luke cartoon, Daisy Town from 1971. The cartoon was partially an original story, which was later turned into an album in 1983, and partially a mixture of several side stories from the albums (voices by Pierre Trabaud, Jacques Jouanneau, Jacques Balutin, and Pierre Tornade as Joe, Jack, William, and Averell respectively). In the following cartoons, including the latest cartoon from 2009, the four brothers have appeared on a regular basis and will presumably continue to do so. When Lucky Luke was transferred to live action movies in 1991, the Dalton Brothers were there too in both movies. Joe was played by Ron Carey, Jack by Bo Greigh, William by Dominic Barto and Averell by Fritz Sperberg. The third movie, Les Dalton from 2004, was a Dalton Brothers movie rather than a Lucky Luke movie. Here Joe and Averell were played by the french comic duo Eric and Ramzy, while Saïd Serrari and Romain Berger make an appearence as Jack and William.

Several Lucky Luke games have been released over the years, the earliest record of the Dalton Brothers appearing in games so far is Lucky Luke: The Video Game from 1996. They have appeared in at least two more game, in Lucky Luke: Western fever for PS1 and Lucky Luke: Go West for PC, Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS from 2007, and most likely they have appeared in other games.

Comics[]

The Daltons have appeared in roughly half of all of the Lucky Luke comics. Though they usually act as one of the primary threats in the comics they appear in, they sometimes act as side characters or comic relief to the stories that they are in, epsecially in the series' later issues.

Although they made a brief cameo in the series' 11th comic Lucky Luke versus Joss Jamon, they had made their official debut in the comic following this, The Dalton Cousins. The comic centers around their attempt to encounter, dispose of and eventually become partners in crime with Lucky Luke, all of them failed because of him constantly tricking them or due to the brothers' incompetence as a criminals, hinted initially by their low bounties: wanted for just a couple of dollars or not wanted at all in Averell's case. After a incessant traning, the Daltons are ready to track down the cowboy and face him once again, with most of them following a specific pattern which best describes his personality: Averell faces him in a fist fight, William cunningly disguises himself in order to hit him with a dagger, Jack ambushes him during a fast-paced shoot-out. Joe is the only one who didn't actually fight Luke, despite being the Dalton with the biggest hartred towards the cowboy, as he tried to run away from him instead. After taken out all four of them, they're put under bars and blame each other.

The Daltons[]

Joe Dalton[]

The oldest and shortest of the brothers, Joe acts as the leader of the group. He is always angry and morose and is the only to be shown to have a personal grudge against Luke. He has shown to have enough intelligence to mastermind their plans and even manipulate others. According to Morris, he is 22 years old.

Joe's overall nature even involves in him being a short-tempered, selfish, arrogant, stubborn, self-centered, reckless, and demanding individual, he displays a superiority complex towards his surroundings and these traits is what causes him to always have bad things going on in his life, going so-far to even be hated by his own mother for his childish and grumpy behaviors.

William and Jack Dalton[]

The middle brothers both in age and height, they remain silent for the majority of the time, only following Joe around. Because of this, they have no defined personality traits. At most, the both of them typically tell Joe to calm down when he gets angry or when he is attacking Averell. They also usually compliment Joe's plans and pull through with them. On the other hand, they will also tell Averell to shut up.

Due to the lack of defined personality traits, the two are typically confused for one another, the taller of the two sometimes mistakenly referred to as "William" and the shorter of the two sometimes mistakenly referred to as "Jack". However they switch, Morris drew William as the smallest of these two and should be 21 years old, and Jack as the tallest and 20 years old. Fortunately, the two of them earned some personality traits over the years, especially in some of the comics and in "The Daltons" to make them stand out from each other.

William[]

Taller than Joe, but shorter than the rest, he was originally portrayed as a trigger-happy sniper with an obsession with weapons. While he kept his hyperactive and overly emotional trait, he is now the engineer and Joe's main sidekick, often at the forefront when it comes to help with the brothers' escape. In addition he is the most mature as well as the one with the most common sense, being Joe's main objector who calls out the flaws in his plans.

Jack[]

Taller than William but shorter than Averell, originally meant to be the cunning master of disguise. Nowadays he is better known as the cultured bookworm of the group, often mentioning interesting facts about science or other subjects that come from the books he reads in his leisure. Not to mention he is the suitor of the gang, he tends to rival Joe when they share the same love interest. Otherwise he is just portrayed as the peacemaker of the family or the clumsy one when Averell is not around.

Averell Dalton[]

Averell Dalton is the youngest and tallest of the brothers and the last, although, unlike the rest of them, Averell is quite the opposite of Joe, he is naive, calm, joyful, caring, nice for others regardless of who they are, and always treats the surroundings as equals. His mother always loves him for how kind-hearted he was, but because of this, it also causes him to be look down by his brothers, as they find that his naive nature only gets them into more troubles, especially Joe, who constantly views Averell is extremely inferior to the rest of his brothers. He is stated to be 19 years old.

Nevertheless, Averell is shown to have no trouble in being a criminal in his life, as it is known that he wouldn't hesitate to follow his brother's orders, or convict a crime, showing that despite his kind-hearted nature and ongoing caring, he can also be a dangerous individual in some instances.
