Sydney Measles Outbreak: Symptoms, Exposure Sites, and Vaccination Advice (2026)

Sydney's measles outbreak is growing, and health authorities are urging residents to be vigilant. A concerning development has emerged as a person in southwest Sydney has contracted the highly contagious disease, despite not having visited any known exposure sites.

NSW Health has confirmed that the individual contracted measles, but they are yet to identify the source of the infection. This brings the total number of measles cases in New South Wales this year to 22. The affected person visited Fresh & Hot Restaurant in Wolli Creek and several health facilities in Campbeltown and Gregory Hills between February 22nd and 25th.

The mystery surrounding the infection source highlights the potential for measles to spread within communities, even without direct exposure to known cases.

Many of the exposure sites are located in Sydney's CBD and the Inner West, as well as pockets of the North Shore and Western Sydney. Health officials are advising people who visited these sites to monitor for symptoms, which can take up to 18 days to appear. Symptoms include fever, sore eyes, runny nose, and cough, followed by a red, blotchy rash.

Measles is highly contagious, and the potential for further spread within the community is a concern. Dr Stephen Conaty from the South Western Sydney Local Health District emphasizes the importance of staying up-to-date with vaccinations, particularly the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine. This vaccine is effective in protecting individuals from contracting the disease.

While the source of the latest infection remains unknown, the situation underscores the need for heightened awareness and vigilance in the community. People who were at the exposure sites are being advised to monitor for symptoms and seek testing if they develop any early symptoms, even if they haven't visited the identified locations. The full list of exposure sites can be found on the NSW Health website.

The growing outbreak serves as a reminder of the importance of vaccination and community awareness in preventing the spread of infectious diseases.
