Breaking News: A Fashion Farewell!
Pieter Mulier, the creative mastermind behind Alaïa, has chosen renowned photographer Steven Meisel for his final campaign as the brand's creative director. This marks the end of an era, as Mulier prepares to bid adieu to his five-year journey with the Paris-based fashion house.
The campaign, released exclusively to WWD, showcases five emerging models captured through Meisel's lens. It continues a legacy of collaboration with the industry's top photographers, a tradition started by the late Azzedine Alaïa and carried forward by Mulier himself.
But here's where it gets intriguing: Meisel, an American photographer known for his influential work, is said to echo the reduced and sculptural aesthetic of Mulier's winter-spring collection. Alaïa describes it as "a simplicity and frontal quality that introduces an intentional radicality. No noise, just beauty."
The campaign's purity and focus on the body and garments will be on display at Milan newsstands starting Tuesday, and will also grace billboards and kiosks during Paris Fashion Week.
And this is the part most people miss: there's a campaign film too, featuring the same soundtrack as the show, created by Gustave Rudman.
Mulier's time at Alaïa has been eventful and celebrated, and he's now set to join Versace in Milan, as reported. His fashion journey began working with Raf Simons in Antwerp, and he later collaborated with Simons at Jil Sander, Calvin Klein, and Dior.
So, what do you think of this final campaign? Does it live up to the legacy of Alaïa and Mulier's vision? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
