A bold move has been made by Reform UK, as they propose a radical overhaul of the UK's electoral system. The party's leader, Nigel Farage, has sparked controversy with his suggestions, which include a major crackdown on postal voting and the removal of voting rights for Commonwealth citizens.
Farage argues that postal voting has brought the UK's elections into disrepute, claiming it is riddled with fraud and cheating. He proposes a strict limitation on postal voting, allowing it only for specific groups such as the elderly, disabled, and serving military personnel. This is a stark contrast to the current system, which offers postal voting to all eligible voters.
But here's where it gets controversial... Reform UK also wants to strip Commonwealth citizens of their voting rights in UK elections. Currently, these citizens, who qualify as residents, can vote in all types of UK elections. Reform UK believes this undermines national sovereignty and shifts the focus of elections to international rather than domestic issues.
In 2012, the Office for National Statistics estimated that there were around 1.2 million Commonwealth nationals living in the UK. This proposal, therefore, has the potential to impact a significant portion of the population.
Mr. Farage states, "Postal voting has poisoned trust in our democracy. Allowing non-Brits to vote on our future is absurd. British parliamentary elections should be decided by British citizens alone."
The announcement comes after Reform UK called for an investigation into alleged election fraud in a recent by-election. An election observer group reported witnessing "family voting," an illegal practice, which has raised concerns about the integrity of the electoral process.
Tory party chairman Kevin Hollinrake has criticized Reform UK's plans, calling them "headline-grabbing" and a "kneejerk reaction." He warns that such sweeping bans on postal voting could disenfranchise vulnerable groups who rely on this method.
The Reform UK leader has a history of complaining about postal voting when his parties have lost by-elections. In 2015 and 2019, Farage's former parties, Ukip and the Brexit Party, respectively, lost by-elections, and he alleged postal vote abuse in both instances.
However, the latest Electoral Commission data shows no evidence of large-scale election fraud in the UK, with most allegations resolved locally or resulting in no further police action. Despite this, Reform UK continues to push for these reforms, arguing that the Rochdale by-election result in 2024 should serve as a wake-up call.
