Peter Mullan Attacked: Actor Intervenes in Assault, Headbutted (2026)

It's a harsh reality when a hero becomes a victim. Scottish actor Peter Mullan, known for his roles in films like Trainspotting and as an award-winning director for movies such as The Magdalene Sisters and Neds, found himself in a harrowing situation. He was attacked after bravely intervening to stop a man from assaulting a woman. This incident occurred near the O2 Academy in Glasgow on September 20th of the previous year.

Reports indicate that Mullan stepped in to protect the woman from Dylan Bennet, aged 29. Unfortunately, Mullan was wounded on the head during the altercation. Bennet subsequently pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to the assaults on both Mullan and the woman. He received an 18-month jail sentence from Sheriff Iain Fleming.

Details revealed that Bennet had been seen earlier, clutching a bottle of vodka. CCTV footage captured him sprinting towards his partner before seizing her by the neck and violently shaking her for approximately 10 seconds.

According to Fiscal Josh Dowie, Mullan noticed the woman crying and immediately attempted to help. He inquired with security if she was alright, and was informed that the police had been called.

"Mr. Mullan turned around towards Bennet and the woman to see him assaulting her," Dowie stated. "He turned back and intervened then stood between them. Mr. Mullan told Bennet that the police had been called and at this point he was headbutted."

But here's where it gets controversial... Bennet also brandished a glass bottle at both Mullan and the woman during the incident. When the police arrived, they found Bennet being held by security staff.

Tony Callaghan, Bennet's defense lawyer, explained that his client had been at a party where he consumed a cocktail of alcohol and drugs throughout the night. He added that an argument had escalated between Bennet and his partner. The lawyer also mentioned that his client expressed deep regret for his actions.

And this is the part most people miss... The bravery of Mullan, who put himself in harm's way to protect another person, is commendable. However, the incident also raises questions about the prevalence of violence and the potential risks faced by those who intervene in such situations.
