A new era for African human rights leadership is here! On October 21, 2025, the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (ACHPR) elected its future leaders, setting the stage for the next two years of human rights advocacy and protection across the continent. But who are these new leaders, and what does their election mean for Africa?
Introducing the New Bureau Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson:
Hon. Commissioner Idrissa Sow from West Africa has been elected as the new Chairperson, with Hon. Commissioner Hatem Essaiem from North Africa stepping into the role of Vice-Chairperson. This dynamic duo will lead the Commission's activities, replacing the former Chairperson, Hon. Commissioner Remy Ngoy Lumbu, and Vice-Chair, Hon. Commissioner Janet Ramatoulie Sallah-Njie.
The election, held during the 85th Ordinary Session of the ACHPR in Banjul, The Gambia, followed the procedures outlined in the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights and the ACHPR's Rules of Procedure. The ACHPR: A Pillar of African Human Rights:
The ACHPR is not just any organization; it's an autonomous body within the African Union, consisting of 11 Commissioners elected by the Assembly of Heads of State and Government. Their mandate, as outlined in Article 45 of the African Charter, includes interpreting the Charter's provisions and advocating for fundamental freedoms.
The African Charter, which came into force on October 21, 1986, has been ratified by an impressive 54 out of 55 African Union Member States. This near-universal acceptance highlights the continent's commitment to human rights.
