Sherwood residents, you've been waiting, and now, a mobile library has arrived! After the closure of the old library on Spondon Street back in 2017, Sherwood has been without a local library. Now, a temporary mobile library service has rolled into town to offer a much-needed literary lifeline. This mobile library is a welcome sight, especially considering the delays the new, permanent library has faced. The original plan was to open the new library in the summer of 2024, but setbacks with the building have pushed the timeline back.
On Saturday, residents were able to visit the mobile library in Woodthorpe Grange Park for the first time. This initiative aims to serve as a 'bridge' until the new library is up and running, which is now expected in the spring of 2026.
The mobile library will be open on specific dates and times, offering a convenient way for people to borrow and return books. Specifically, it will be available between 10:00 GMT and 13:00 on the following dates:
- 20 December
- 10 January
- 17 January
- 24 January
- 31 January
Nottingham City Council leader Neghat Khan emphasized that the mobile library isn't meant to be a replacement, but rather a temporary solution. She noted that it offers a valuable service for those wanting to access library resources while the new building is completed. The council is also considering moving the mobile library to different locations within Sherwood to make it even more accessible.
Bal Johal, a 60-year-old resident from Woodthorpe, expressed her satisfaction with the temporary measure, saying, “As a short-term measure, I think it's a really good idea.” She also highlighted the significant impact the absence of a library has had on the community, especially for children and elderly people.
But here's where it gets controversial... What do you think about the delays? Do you think the mobile library is a good solution? Share your thoughts in the comments!
