Lions have strong, compact bodies and powerful forelegs, teeth and jaws for pulling down and killing prey. Their coats are yellow-gold, and adult males have shaggy manes that range in color from blond to reddish-brown to black. The length and color of a lion's mane is likely determined by age, genetics and hormones.

Primary activities include hunting, eating, protecting territory, mating, establishing pack leadership and caring for the young. Male and female lions have different responsiblities. Males aim to establish and maintain dominance and father cubs. Females provide for and protect pride members.

Lions are highly territorial and occupy the same area for generations. Females actively defend their territories against other females, while resident males protect prides from rival coalitions. Territory size depends on prey abundance, as well as access to water and denning sites.

Water: While lions are strong swimmers, they are not as agile in the water as some other animals, such as crocodiles. Lions can be vulnerable to attack while crossing rivers or other bodies of water. Large Prey: While lions are skilled hunters, they are most successful when hunting in groups and targeting smaller prey.

Lions enjoy relaxing and lazing around. They spend up to 21 hours each day resting and sleeping. They have few sweat glands, so they wisely tend to conserve their energy by resting during the day and become more active at night when it is cooler. Lions have terrific night vision.

Lions are carnivores, meaning their diet is made up of meat. They will eat pretty much every animal they can prey upon, however mostly this tends to be buffalo, zebra, giraffe, warthog and antelope species. They will also prey on the young of larger mammal species such as rhino and elephant if the opportunity arises.

Lions (male and female) are afraid of large mammals like giraffes, hippos and elephants, but they are also afraid of their day-to-day prey. Every time a hunt takes place, their prey animals are going to try their best to resist.

They show affection toward one another by grooming, rubbing heads, and resting together. The males protect the pride from other males or predators, and mate with many females. They also play with the cubs, teach them skills, and put up with their mischief!
