Katie Maloney and Tom Schwartz’s Relationship Timeline (2024)

Showing it all. Since Vanderpump Rules debuted on Bravo in 2013, Katie Maloney and Tom Schwartz have been candid about their road to marriage.

The couple originally met two years before their romance was documented on screen. At the time, Schwartz showed up to a group event with another date instead of Maloney.

“He had a girl with him, that was the funny part was that finally I’m meeting this guy that supposedly wants to meet me, that’s so perfect for me, and he’s got a girl with him,” Maloney recalled to The Daily Dish in March 2017.

Schwartz noted during the same interview that their initial encounter didn’t make him think they had a future together. “The very first night there was no spark,” he added, “But the second night I was introduced to her and given a little backstory, that’s when it clicked.”

After they started dating, Maloney and Schwartz decided to keep their romance “very casual” instead of putting a label on it. The Utah native later explained how she decided to take things to the next level.

“I didn’t ask you what we were. I was like, ‘So, I know I haven’t really been wanting a relationship. You haven’t really been wanting a relationship. But, we both really like each other and I think we should give this a real shot,” she said during a joint interview on her podcast “You’re Gonna Love Me” in August 2020. “I basically asked you to be my boyfriend and you said, ‘Well, I don’t know if I’ll be a very good boyfriend, but I’m down to give it a shot.”

The former SUR waitress added: “I was like, ‘Good enough for me, because I don’t know how I’m going to be either.’ But then, you know, 10 years later here we are.”

Three years after they first appeared on Vanderpump Rules, the pair tied the knot in California in 2016. Maloney and Schwartz later revealed that due to lost paperwork, the union wasn’t legal — which led to a second wedding ceremony in 2019.

As their romantic woes played out on screen, Maloney addressed the assumption that the duo are always fighting.

“I just want to say, I feel like the misconceptions of our relationship is that we are like, Tom’s deeply unhappy and I’m a miserable shrew of a wife,” she said on a February 2021 episode of her podcast. “I mean, we don’t hide our fights. We have, you’ve seen on the show like pretty intense, horrific fights that, you know, suck. But, we’ve always been willing and able to like, live our relationship out loud. So you, you do see like the worst of the worst, but that’s not like the constant daily for us.”

Schwartz, for his part, admitted that there were times he wasn’t sure about their future together. “I’m happy we made it for sure,” he shared. “There were points in our relationship. Which always kills me to say, which I didn’t think we were going to make it, you know?”

He continued: “But you know, there were points in the relationship where I was reluctant and unsure about our future as we’ve talked about many times, but, you know, right now, I’m happier than I’ve ever been.”

However, after sparking split speculation when Maloney ditched her wedding ring in March 2022, the couple officially announced their breakup via Instagram. She filed for divorce one week later,Us Weeklyconfirmed.

As viewers watched Schwartz get accused of cheating on his wife, Maloney got honest about the reality of the situation.

“There's a whole range of emotions that was going through me. It was humiliating, really,” she told Us about rewatching the drama unfold on screen. "It was just disappointing that we had been in such a good place. I mean, we went to hell and back before we got married, and essentially we'd had to burn our relationship to the ground, and once we had gotten married we'd really recommitted and were on such a good path together that I just would never have expected to hear that.”

While reflecting on their ups and downs, the pair explained how facing their problems helped their relationship in the long run.

“We've been through so much and I mean, arguably at so many points in our relationship, you could say, 'They probably should've broken up or gone their separate ways,’” Schwartz told Us in February 2020. “But we got through it. We were stubborn. We put the work in and now I can say, without a doubt, I'm happier than I've ever been. I think we both are.”

He added: “There were times early on that I definitely didn't think it was going to last. I think we both had moments early on like various, but man, I'm just so happy we made it.”

During season 9 of Vanderpump Rules, Maloney and Schwartz opened up about their decision to have an abortion in the past.

“I know I wanted to have kids, but I just knew that that was just not the time in my life,” she explained, referring to her pregnancy from their first year of dating. “Everyone, every woman, every person should be able to decide what’s best for them.”

Schwartz, for his part, noted that he wasn't in a place to look after a child, saying, “I think we would have broken up [and felt] like, ‘This is too much.’ But we would have been good parents.”

The Minnesota native said he felt ready to start a family with his wife. “You’re gonna be such a good mom. I’m gonna be such a good dad,” he told Maloney. “There aren’t a lot of things I’m 100 percent sure about in life, but I’m 100 percent sure I’m gonna be a good dad.”

"Goodbye 2021. You brought some pretty amazing things into my life. Some amazing new little lives, who I loves so dearly. Some really difficult moments and triumphs! Feeling really hopeful. Love you all!" Maloney wrote alongside an Instagram pic of her ringing in the new year with Schwartz.

The TomTom co-owner revealed that having children wasn't off the table for the pair. “Time will tell,” he exclusively told Us in February 2022. “I don’t know [when]. I love kids. We just never got around to it. It’s not too late, I know.”

During a conversation with costar Lala Kent on her podcast, Maloney addressed fan rumors about her relationship with Schwartz.

"There was one thing that was sent to me that was probably one of the worst things I've ever seen. There was speculation that Tom was hooked on heroin. That is just taking it too far. That's just dangerous allegations," Maloney shared about posts discussing her husband's online absence. "Tom has been traveling to see his dad because he's in the hospital and really struggling with his health. They are blaming his absence on heavy drug use."

After Maloney was spotted without her wedding ring in early March, they revealed their breakup via their respective Instagram accounts on March 15.

“After 12 years on an adventure through life together Tom and I are ending our marriage," Maloney wrote. "This ending is not met with resentment or animosity ... We have deep admiration for one another that will always remain and we cherish our friendship. Although we may be on different paths we will continue to love and support one another’s happiness.”

Schwartz echoed the same sentiment in his statement, though he also revealed that his estranged wife was the one who pulled the plug on their marriage.

"Fully respect Katie’s decision and we’ve had healthy, productive conversations about it," he shared. "It would be far sadder if she decided to stay with me whilst not happy.” He went on to say that despite the ups and downs that played out on Pump Rules, he and Maloney "had some of the most blissful, romantic, fun times humanely possible over the course of our relationship. I’m talking heaven on earth level joy."

According to court docs obtained by Us, Maloney listed the pair’s date of separation as February 12, one month before they publicly announced their split. She cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the divorce. The paperwork revealed that the TV personalities were still living at the same address and did not have a prenuptial agreement.

The couple moved out of the home they shared in June 2022, three months after announcing their split. "I hate goodbyes. And this one hurts a lot. The emotions and words are hard to pin down. Closing this chapter on my life feels like attending my own funeral," Maloney wrote via Instagram, along with a photo of her sitting on the floor of an empty dining room. "But I’m very much alive. Thank you house for being the coziest brightest home, for the memories, for being my sanctuary, for letting me dress you up like a hallmark movie set at Christmas and for being OURS. I’m going to miss coming home."

During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, Schwartz reflected on the mistakes he made in his marriage. "I strayed a few times. There were times I thought the relationship was going to come to an end and I was a sloppy douchebag," he admitted at the time. "I don't think I'll ever get married again. I'll fall in love, I just don't think I'll ever be married again."

The former couple got into an argument while filming season 10 after Katie accused Scheana Shay of trying to set Tom up with Raquel Leviss.

"I don't like it. It makes me feel uncomfortable. I am not being irrational. And then here's Scheana acting like a f—king moron," Katie said in July 2022 while filming, to which the Minnesota native replied, "It's like you are trying to create imaginary boundaries on things that don't even exist. Like, the Raquel thing isn't even a thing."

Tom eventually asked Katie to leave his restaurant after she stopped him from talking to a patron. "You can't [stop me from talking to someone] because it reflects poorly on my business," he told his ex-wife. "It's always about you, isn't it? I think you should leave — I would prefer actually if you left. [There is] bad energy in here. Emotionally entitled bad energy."

During a confessional, Tom opened up about his past dynamic with Katie, saying, "When we were still together this would happen a lot and I was forced to choose another temporary ultimatum. We are not married anymore so not my problem anymore."
