Japan's Biggest Sushi Roll: Aeon's Super-Thick Ehomaki for Setsubun 2026 | Gokubutomaki Unveiled! (2026)

Get ready to feast! Japanese grocery stores are about to unleash their most colossal sushi roll yet for Setsubun, and it's a game-changer. This isn't just any sushi; it's the 'super-thick' ehomaki, a luxurious culinary experience designed to bring good fortune to your home and family in the coming year.

With the holidays just around the corner, it's easy to get caught up in the present. But at SoraNews24, we're always looking ahead, especially when it comes to food!

We recently attended an exclusive unveiling of this ehomaki masterpiece. If you're a sushi aficionado, you'll know that 'maki' is Japanese for 'roll'. The 'eho' in ehomaki refers to the 'lucky direction', as these special sushi rolls are traditionally eaten on Setsubun, a Japanese holiday marking the start of spring.

But here's where it gets interesting: simply eating an ehomaki isn't enough to secure blessings. You must face the auspicious direction of the year while enjoying it. This tradition adds a layer of fun and meaning to the Setsubun celebration.

Setsubun, celebrated on February 3rd, is a special occasion, and ehomaki reflect this. While sushi traditionally features vinegared rice, modern ehomaki can include creative fillings like fried shrimp or even meat. However, seafood remains the most popular choice. At the Aeon supermarket chain's ehomaki preview event, they showcased a new ehomaki that promises a taste of the ocean due to its massive size and numerous ingredients.

Introducing the Gokubutomaki, or 'Super-thick Roll'! Aeon boasts an incredible 26 different fillings inside, in addition to rice and seaweed. These include various types of tuna, shrimp, scallops, Japanese omelet, oba (Japanese basil), ikura (salmon roe), grilled salmon, and nianago (stewed saltwater eel). It measures a whopping 14 centimeters (5.5 inches) wide and weighs a hefty 1.7 kilograms (3.7 pounds), making it Aeon's heaviest ehomaki ever sold.

Naturally, we had to witness this culinary marvel firsthand. The event staff demonstrated the Gokubutomaki's creation, and we rushed to the sushi chef's workspace.

The process begins with a sheet of nori (seaweed) as the base, followed by a layer of rice. The rice is carefully piled higher on the sides, creating small embankments to keep the fillings secure.

Then, one by one, the 26 ingredients are meticulously added.

The sheer number of fillings requires a very long piece of nori. The Gokubutomaki is wrapped around itself more than once to form its impressive cylinder. The result is a thing of substantial beauty.

As tradition dictates, you're supposed to eat ehomaki, or at least the first bite, while holding the uncut roll. Unless you have the jaw capacity of a snake, you'll likely need to settle for a corner piece of the Gokubutomaki.

The Gokubutomaki is priced at 6,458 yen (US$42). Considering its size and the variety of ingredients, it seems like a reasonable value, especially since it's meant to be shared. Preorders open on the Aeon website on January 10th.

And this is the part most people miss... The lucky direction for Setsubun 2026 is south-southeast. So, be sure to have a good grip on the Gokubutomaki if you choose it this year. Dropping it on your toes could be surprisingly painful!
