Is there a shut down log? (2024)

And if so, where does it live?

The reason I ask is that when I shut down, after cinnamon has closed, an error message flashes up on the screen. Think it might be memory related, but it's only there for about a second - not long enough to read and even trying to take a video with my camera - too blurry to read.

Running cinnamon 18.3 on a T430.

There is no Shutdown log as such. Once the local files system is shutdown no further log entries are saved.
What there is will most likely be found in /var/log/kernel.log or /var/log/syslog .
you can try looking at systemd's journel which may reveal something. use this command

journalctl -b 

you can look through this journal and see if you notice any errors between boots if you append the command with -n250 it will show only the last 250 lines in the journal.
