Prepare to be amazed! Scientists have just unveiled a remarkable new species, a true gem in the world of reptiles. The Golden-Tongued Lizard, a hidden treasure in China's mountains, has finally revealed itself.
Deep within the Hengduan Mountains, a dedicated team of researchers embarked on a journey of discovery. Their persistence paid off, leading to the identification of a mysterious lizard species in the upper Dadu River Valley. Years of field surveys culminated in an unexpected revelation.
The research team's expeditions, spanning from 2018 onwards, uncovered a lizard population with unique traits, unlike any other Diploderma species in the region. Through meticulous genetic testing and morphological comparisons, they confirmed what they had suspected: a new species, one that had eluded documentation until now.
Meet Diploderma bifluviale, a name that pays homage to its discovery near the confluence of two rivers. With this addition, China now boasts 47 recognized species of Diploderma, a genus that spans East Asia and the northern Indochinese Peninsula, adapting to diverse mountain habitats.
Measuring a modest 6-7 centimeters, D. bifluviale captivates with its distinctive appearance. Its wheat-colored tongue and unique coloring set it apart from its close relatives. This lizard thrives in semi-arid shrublands and rocky valleys bathed in sunlight, at elevations ranging from 2,100 to 2,500 meters. The small-leaved shrubs and scattered stones of its habitat provide the perfect camouflage for this elusive creature.
"This discovery sheds light on the untapped biodiversity of the upper Dadu River," the researchers wrote in their report published in ZooKeys. Their findings emphasize that even in regions thought to be well-studied, nature still holds secrets waiting to be unveiled.
