A Shocking Move: G2 Esports' IGL Valyn on the Sudden Departure of JonahP
In a surprising turn of events, G2 Esports' decision to part ways with their Canadian player, JonahP, left little room for a new team search and caught many off guard, especially given the organization's impressive performances in 2025.
G2 Esports, a consistent force in the VALORANT Champions scene, not only secured their spot in the International League for another year but also achieved remarkable results. They finished as runners-up at Masters Bangkok, an incredible feat, and managed to secure a top five placement at Masters Toronto, showcasing their potential on the global stage.
But here's where it gets controversial... In an exclusive interview with Esports Insider at the 2026 Americas Kickoff pre-event press conference, G2's IGL, Jacob 'Valyn' Batio, revealed the truth behind JonahP's removal. It was a sudden, unexpected decision, one that left many fans and analysts scratching their heads.
"We're always striving for improvement, and this Offseason was a whirlwind. It was a decision made in the heat of the moment, and I think everyone can agree it came as a surprise. We felt the need to bring in a fresh perspective, especially regarding the mental aspect of the game, which we believed was lacking at international events."
Enter Andrej 'babybay', a player with a unique skill set and a strong mental game. G2 saw an improvement in their performance when babybay stepped in during Stage 2, and they wanted to capitalize on that momentum going into 2026. Valyn believes babybay's presence on the starting roster could be the key to their success.
Babybay himself added, "My role here is to keep the team focused and on track mentally. I assist Valyn with his calling strategies and ensure everyone stays sharp, especially in distracting situations."
Talking about his return to competitive VALORANT, babybay expressed his excitement, "Finding my form again and creating a unique playstyle with these new agents is a challenge I'm embracing. No one knows how I'll approach these characters, and that's an advantage."
G2 Esports' Ultimate Goal: Lifting an International VCT Trophy in 2026
G2 has established itself as one of the most consistent teams in VCT since joining the International League in 2024. However, the organization is yet to claim its first international title, a goal they're determined to achieve in 2026.
They came tantalizingly close at Masters Bangkok but fell just short against T1 in a heart-wrenching best-of-five series. Valyn acknowledges the mental challenges the team faced and believes babybay's addition is a step towards overcoming those hurdles.
"Last year had its ups and downs. We performed well at times, but Champs [Champions Paris] was a bitter disappointment. We're aiming for that top spot, and we believe this decision could be the key. It was tough letting JonahP go, but we're hopeful for the future."
All matches from the event will be streamed live on VCT Americas' official Twitch and YouTube channels, so fans can witness G2's journey and the impact of their roster changes.
