Fletcher Oxford, a Tauranga performer, is back on stage in his hometown, taking on the lead role of Fiyero in Tauranga Musical Theatre's production of Wicked. This return is more than just another acting job for Oxford; it's a homecoming to the community that helped launch his career after nearly three years of performing around the world. Oxford's journey began in New Zealand, where he developed a passion for performing arts at a young age, participating in various music, drama, jazz, and choral events. He attended Pyes Pā School, Tauranga Intermediate, and Tauranga Boys' College, where he was encouraged by teachers to pursue his dreams. Oxford's talent was further nurtured through local opportunities like the Tauranga Music Schools' Choral Festival, which featured themes ranging from The Beatles to Sesame Street.
After leaving New Zealand, Oxford embarked on a global adventure, performing in various productions. He worked at Universal Studios Beijing, where he brought Johnny the Gorilla to life in the animated film Sing. Oxford also performed in the Frog Choir at the Harry Potter attraction and was part of Universal Pop, a popular pop singing and dancing troupe. His travels took him to the Middle East, where he performed in Shrek the Musical in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Dubai Opera. Oxford's experiences abroad have been a highlight, allowing him to sing, dance, and act in new and exciting corners of the world.
However, despite the thrilling opportunities, Oxford has missed the comforts of home. He jokes about missing mince and cheese pies, but more importantly, he has missed his family and animals, including his cat and horse. Oxford's performing career is a series of contracts, and he has chosen to stay in each role, whether it's for 15 months or longer. Now, he is back in Tauranga to take on the role of Fiyero, a role he understudied in the 2019 production. This time, he has the chance to fully embody the character and bring his seven years of growth as a performer to the stage.
Oxford's connection to the local theatre community is deep, and he is grateful for the opportunities Tauranga Musical Theatre has provided. He founded Oxford Performing Arts, a Tauranga-based music and drama school, in 2019, ensuring that local students continue to receive quality education even when he is away. Oxford's passion for the performing arts is evident in his independently funded album of songs, which tells stories about his life experiences. He hopes to continue working across various performing arts genres, including musical theatre, television, and film.
Oxford's message to young Tauranga performers is clear: a career in the arts is possible and beautiful. He wants to inspire the next generation of performers and show them that dreams can become reality. As he prepares for his next chapter, which includes a performing opportunity in Singapore, Oxford is grateful for the support of his community and the opportunities it has provided. His journey is a testament to the power of pursuing one's passions and the endless possibilities that await those who dare to dream.
