A decade ago I met the tall, ultra-telegenic historian Dan Snow, then 33, and obviously blessed. He had a flourishing television career, was newly married to Lady Edwina Grosvenor, daughter of the 6th Duke of Westminster, one of Britain’s richest men, and had a baby daughter.
When I asked what was the worst thing he’d ever experienced, Snow, who has a double first from Oxford, said sorrowfully it was losing the Boat Race twice (he was on the winning side once), most devastatingly in 2001 when he was boat club president.
