Australian Space Startup's Liquidation: A $5 Million Debt to the NT Government (2026)

A promising space startup, Equatorial Launch Australia (ELA), has hit a major roadblock, leaving a trail of unanswered questions and a $5 million debt to the Northern Territory government.

ELA's story began with a bang, quite literally, as it launched NASA rockets from its Arnhem Space Centre, marking a historic moment for Australia's space sector. But the journey took a turn, and now, it's facing liquidation.

The Rise and Fall of ELA

In 2022, ELA captured the nation's attention with its successful rocket launches, a feat not seen in Australia for over two decades. This led to ambitious plans for expansion, with hopes of becoming a weekly rocket launch site.

However, in 2024, ELA's operations came to a halt in the Northern Territory. The company cited delays and failed negotiations with the Northern Land Council as the reasons for its departure. The NLC, however, refuted these claims.

At the time, the Northern Territory government confirmed its investment of around $5 million in ELA and its intention to explore legal options regarding its stake in the company.

Chief Minister Lia Finnochiaro described ELA's collapse as a 'mess' left behind by the previous Labor government, which the current Country Liberal Party (CLP) government now has to navigate.

The Liquidation Process

ELA's liquidation was confirmed by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), with Geoffrey Peter Granger appointed as the liquidator. The NT government retains shares worth $5.44 million in ELA and is considering its options to act in the best interest of the Territory.

ELA's chief executive, Michael Jones, declined to comment on the matter.

An ASIC spokesperson stated that the liquidator would settle accounts in a fair and orderly manner, benefiting creditors. The spokesperson also emphasized that it is the liquidator's responsibility to determine the causes of the company's collapse and any potential returns for creditors.

Failed Relocation Attempts

Jamie Gane, the chair of the Weipa Town Authority, revealed that ELA had attempted to relocate its launch site to the mining town of Weipa in Queensland but abandoned those plans last year. The company faced challenges in securing the necessary land agreements.

In December, a development application was submitted to the Cook Shire Council by Australian Space Centre, another trading name used by ELA, for a new spaceport in Bloomfield, Far North Queensland. However, the application was withdrawn in January.

Federal Minister Tim Ayres remained silent on the matter, with his spokesperson stating that Australia's space sector continues to grow, focusing on launch and return operations and the potential economic benefits of a Technology Safeguards Agreement with the US.

But here's where it gets controversial: With ELA's collapse, what happens to the government's investment and the potential for future space projects in the Northern Territory? And this is the part most people miss: How can we ensure that such ambitious ventures don't leave a trail of financial burdens for taxpayers?

What are your thoughts on this space startup's journey and its impact on the Australian space sector? Do you think the government's investment was a wise move, or should they have explored other options? We'd love to hear your opinions in the comments below!
