Amber traffic light (2024)

Has anyone notice that the 'amber' time at most traffic junctions ( regardless of the junction's width ) here is very short?
Assuming driving at the legal speed of 60kph when you enter the junction just before the light turns amber, there is a chance of you not making it to the other side before the light turns red. This is especially so at wide junctions, eg. Mounbatten / Old Airport Rd, Thomson / Moulmein Rd junctions, and when there is traffic infront.

In the above scenario, is the driver technically 'beating the red light'?

On a daily basis, I take Braddell Road turning onto CTE (City) - there is a red-light camera there (opposite Comfort Delgro). Bear in mind that the Braddell - CTE junction is huge. I have done it many times when I beat the amber. I am quite positive before I even reach the filter onto CTE on the opposite end, the lights would be red. But so far I have only received a ticket for beating red - which I really did, $200 fine and 12 points. Else, I could assume the camera system tracks the boundary based on the red trigger, not the amber trigger. In other words, where you cross the existing road, if it is still amber, then technically you should not be reckoned to be "beating the red light."

Re: Amber traffic light

I suspect cameras mounted at traffic junctions do not snap car in turning lanes. As to how long the amber lights stay, it may also depend on the computer strips that have been placed under the road at the turning lanes. If say you are parked stationary waiting to turn, the strips can sense how many cars in the queue and adjust the timing of when green turn to amber. But of coz, the road engineers can also override that by capping the time. I am juz guessing all these though.

Re: Amber traffic light

Traffic junction camera has to capture 2 photo for beating a red lights. aka, 1 on crossing the line into junction at red(activation of the red-light camera) n the other at the end of the junction(a comfirmation shots) to consider someone has actually beating a red light.

Re: Amber traffic light

i thought the camera wont be activated until 1 secs after the lights turned red? so som time when the light just turn red and u cheong over almost at the same time, you are still save.

just my guess. dun try.

Not true. For example, the Victoria Street heading towards Bugis junction with Rochor Road, left turning towards ECP, has the camera angled especially for cars turning left.

Also, some of the cameras BELOW the PIE flyovers are also snapping cars turning.

Most of the cameras are set to snap about 0.5 sec AFTER the light has turned red. So if you cross the sensor when the light is amber, you're clear.

Re: Amber traffic light

every single traffic light has the same amber light duration, for the very simple fact that it will cause confusion and even accidents if otherwise.

Re: Amber traffic light

I think the amber traffic light duration is also a function of the posted speed limit of the road, e.g., if the road speed limit is 70km/h, then the stopping duration is longer, hence the amber traffic light duration should be longer, as compared to a 50km/h road?

Shaun, what's your view on the three arrows leading up to the light?

thanks

Re: Amber traffic light

I was told (can't remember who) that the sensor strip on the road activates the camera when it senses 2 sets of tyres (front pair, then rear pair) roll over it.

Mate, you are driivng far too slow...amber light means you have to speed up and go.

Re: Amber traffic light

The amber light timing for sg. are timed at 3 sec.

For big junctions, they usually have "All Red" time to ensure that vehicle crosses the road before vehicles from the next direction move off

As for beating red light, the red light camrea will only activate when red light is on. 3 factor needs to be there before they will summon u. 1 is that the pic must show the car crossing the STOP line, 2 is that the pic must show that the light is RED and 3, for obvious reason, the pic must show the number plate...

That said, it means that both your axle must cross the STOP line after the light turn red, before the camera will trigger 2 continuous shot....

There is no timer that activates the camera automatically, be it 0.01s, 1s or 2s. Otherwise, the camera will be flashing whole night regardless if there is anyone beating the red light.

When the light turns red, the sensor strip will activate the camera when it senses that there are one, and then two contacts, over it.

So, let's say our front wheel manage to cross the sensor strip line before the light turns red. Then the light turns red, and the sensor, which then activate, will only sense our rear wheel crossing the line, i.e. 1 contact. It will not activate the camera. (Caesar bro is right)

But all these happen in split seconds. Unless we are very confident of our skills and timing and also think that our luck that day damn good, otherwise don't try. Better be safe than sorry.

Red = Stop

Amber == GO FASTER !

Heh heh, I got another version
Red - READY TO GO....(engine and exhaust roaring, car inching forward, ready to chiong when lights turn green....)

Green - GO! (car chiong forward)

Amber = GO FASTER!!

I told the above joke to my sister before she takes her basic driving theory exam. The question then came out and she gave my joke as her answer. She thank me later because she passed, and she told me that luckily I helped her on this question Amber traffic light (14) :shhhh:

You can go this website to check whether there is any traffic offense against a vehicle number:

Singapore Police Force - Electronic Police Centre (ePC)

I check almost every other day as I have a habit to travel "slightly" above speed limit. Knew about it before the letters came for 2 occasions. Then can start early to contact helpful family members / friends with driving license for "advice". Only 7 days to response once letter comes.
