Adobe Faces Legal Battle Over AI Training Data: Authors Sue for Misuse of Their Work
The tech industry's rapid embrace of AI has sparked a heated debate, with a recent lawsuit highlighting a potential ethical and legal gray area. Adobe, a prominent software company, is now at the center of a proposed class-action lawsuit, accused of misusing authors' works in its AI training processes.
The lawsuit, filed on behalf of Elizabeth Lyon, an Oregon-based author, alleges that Adobe utilized pirated versions of numerous books, including Lyon's own guidebooks for non-fiction writing, to train its SlimLM program. This AI model, described by Adobe as a mobile-optimized document assistance tool, was reportedly pre-trained on a dataset that included copyrighted material without proper authorization.
The controversy revolves around the 'SlimPajama' dataset, which Adobe claims was derived from the 'RedPajama' dataset, released by Cerebras in June 2023. However, Lyon's lawsuit argues that 'SlimPajama' is a derivative copy of 'RedPajama,' containing the 'Books3' dataset, which includes the copyrighted works of Lyon and other authors. The 'Books3' collection, comprising 191,000 books, has been a contentious issue in the tech community, with multiple lawsuits citing its use in AI training.
This case is not an isolated incident. In September, Apple faced a lawsuit for using pirated books to train its AI models, and Salesforce was similarly accused in October. The tech industry has witnessed a surge in legal battles over AI training data, with companies agreeing to substantial settlements. For instance, Anthropic paid $1.5 billion to authors who sued them for using pirated material in their chatbot training.
As AI continues to advance, the tech community grapples with the ethical implications of training algorithms on potentially pirated datasets. This lawsuit serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible data usage and the need for transparency in AI development, especially when it comes to protecting the rights of content creators.
