Unlike fashion and interior design trends, architecture trends tend to have a longer shelf-life since building renovations aren’t usually done every 2 or 5 years. Here are some of the prevailing trends from 2018 that we think will carry on to 2019.
Mid Century-Inspired A-Frames
A-frame houses are so-called because of the steep, triangular shape of the roof that resembles the letter A. It used to be a design relic from the 60s to 70s, when houses were generally smaller versus its modern counterparts, especially in the US. It is now valued for its simple and minimalist aesthetic and we’re very curious to see if this trend becomes popular here in the PH as well.
Bold Color Combinations
Bold color combinations are a favorite design trend for a lot of interior designers and for good reason. We think that bold color combinations instantly add character to any space without much investment. From jewel-toned walls and deeply-hued furniture, we think this trend will continue on until 2019. Although fresh and airy spaces will always remain a popular option, especially here in the tropics, deeply-hued walls and bold color combinations add personality to any space.
Eco-friendly Designs
This is one of those trends that will definitely continue to be relevant for the decades to come. As global warming threatens to redesign and reshape our lives, it becomes even more important to #buildbuildbuild with the goal of creating less environmental impact and more lasting designs.
Disaster-Proof Buildings
From hurricanes to typhoons and earthquakes, we’ve seen how these natural disasters affected everyone from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The challenge for us Filipinos is to create eco-friendly, aesthetically-pleasing, and disaster-proof spaces that will make the generations after us feel happy and proud about the footprints that we leave behind.
Indoor-Outdoor Spaces
A prevailing architecture trend, especially for homes, is turning outdoor spaces into functional extensions of the indoors. This is one of those trends that can be perfectly adapted to the Philippine climate by opting for heat and rain-proof furniture.
Blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces means more spaces for entertaining. This isn’t limited to patios that are decorated as a second living room. We’ve seen expansive gardens that are partitioned and extended into a second dining and kitchen area. To seamlessly blend the indoors with the outdoors, glass doors are one of the easier and more popular options that can be used.
Multi-purpose Spaces
Forget about home and commercial spaces that only serve one purpose. As our lives become more hectic and faster-paced, the demands for our living and working spaces must also transform and keep up. This is one of those trends that we think won’t go away soon.
How about you, what’s your favorite trend and why?
